Midnight Musings – A Haiku Collection by Novemberschild (eBook Review)

Poetry and rain both soothe the soul and are best enjoyed late night. It’s this association that attracted me to an eBook titled ‘Midnight Musings.’ A midnight writer for a midnight reader – it sounded like something I would enjoy. Later, I came to know that this collection of poems was written during the April AtoZ challenge.

Romila, who blogs at Novemberschild, has written a collection of 26 haikus on this and that and everything in between. There is one haiku for each alphabet. These power packed capsules will make you smile in fondness, think deeply about social issues, or simply remember a romantic moment. Deeply emotional and heartfelt, her words are relateable and thought-provoking. For those new to haikus, there is a comprehensive description of the Japanese form of poetry.

Of all the haikus she’s written, I especially liked Envy, Knowledge, and Rain. The haiku titled ‘Ying’ which talks about binaries was one that stayed with me for a long time. I associated it with Buddhist philosophy and the need to find a balance in everything. Deeper readings and layers of meanings, that I found in these verses is what makes them so powerful.

I borrow Novermberschild’s words to give you a glimpse into her world – “To strong caffeine, chocolates, diet crackers and music, my companions through many long nights of writing.”
