Memories of Chitkul

Chitkul is the most scenic village in Sangla Valley, easily accessible from Shimla, Delhi and Kalpa by bus. Its claim to fame is that it is the last inhabited settlement before the Indo China border, and was once a part of the trade route to Tibet. It offers several interesting treks and trails, including the black glacier trek.

I stayed here for a about a week and enjoyed the simple pleasures of mountain living. Here’s my journey in simple watercolor illustrations, done on location.

  1. Your sketches are lovely, and your comments match them. I love the night sky over the snow covered hills. I once did a similar sketch in the Philippines, on a deserted beach, in the middle of the night: magic ! You are lucky to be able to travel alone; it’s the best way to experience the poetry of travel. I did this when I was young; now I’m old, and need help with the bag. Do it as long as you can !

    1. I’m so glad … my art captures just a fraction of their beauty. Would love to know your thoughts if you ever visit them.
